Carlisle Citadel Train Station Tours
Built in 1847, on a slum clearance known as a fever pit, the extensive undercroft was created when the Station was extended over a bank.
The rooms in the Undercroft have had various uses over the years, here are some that we know of:
Butchers Room (The hooks are still hanging over a stone gully that would have drained away the blood)
Cold Store (This looks like a crypt, its here that most people experience things)
Old Buffet Room
Lamp Rooms (Young boys were employed to keep paraffin lamps filled and the wicks trimmed)
Foot Warmer Room (There was no heating on the trains, but a foot warmer could be hired)
Garages (Some of the west side arches were later used as Mechanics Garage)
Staff Accommodation
Locker Room (Signing on point etc.)
Census records show that the station was residential: people were born there, lived and died there and there are records of accidents and deaths that could account for some of the reports of Ghosts we have.
