The Maltings Theatre & Cinema

Eastern Lane, Berwick on Tweed ,
The Maltings Theatre & Cinema is the premier performing and media arts venue for north Northumberland and the Scottish Borders. Housed within a purpose-built building in the centre of the historic market town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, The Maltings offers a full programme of nearly 700 events each year – mixing world-class professional performance and film with community-centred activities, workshops and amateur events. At the heart of the building is our beautiful 311-seat Main House theatre with a proscenium arch stage, circle and boxes, and superb sight lines. The Maltings is the largest performing arts venue between Newcastle and Edinburgh – and we have a justly earned reputation for national-quality performance. From Sir Andrew Motion to Lee Evans, Headlong Theatre to Julian Clary, Scottish Ballet to The National Theatre of Scotland, our programme is eclectic and always intriguing. We sell over 50,000 tickets to our events every year - in a town of just 12,000 people. The Henry Travers Studio is a state-of-the-art black box studio theatre, completed in March 2011, which seats 74 on retractable seating and which is programmed with live performance and film throughout the year, as well as hosting a wide range of workshops and classes which attract in the region of 9,000 attendances annually. Our recently refurbished Stage Door Bar at Stalls level is open every night from 6pm until late. The Stage Door bar is an eccentric and bohemian public bar that serves a wide range of hot and cold drinks, as well as hosting live entertainment regularly. On the top floor of the building is The Maltings Kitchen, a fully licenced restaurant and café which serves delicious cakes, coffees and lunches Monday – Saturday through the day, and superb pre-theatre suppers from 5.30 onwards on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Run by award-winning chef David Foxton, The Maltings Kitchen enjoys breath-taking views across the river Tweed over the Jacobean Old Bridge. The Maltings also houses the offices of community arts education social enterprise Think Make Grow and Berwick Film and Media Arts Festival.
