The Marlborough Club

The Marlborough Club

High Street , Newmarket ,
‘The Marlborough Club’ is a magnificent Grade II listed property located just off Newmarket High Street. The property has a long and colourful history dating back to the 17th Century when James I and Charles I became royal patrons of Newmarket due to their passion for horse racing. James I bought the medieval ‘Griffin Inn’, which was demolished and rebuilt as a palace. However, this was short lived and after the English Civil War it was demolished. Built in the early 19th Century, ‘The Marlborough Club’ now stands on the site – previously used as Newmarket’s magistrates court and as an operations centre during WWII before being sold privately in 1949.
