The Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Services Youth Team is made up of two Youth Support Workers, Jess Wadsworth and Eric Bowyer who are both line managed by Neil Porteous. All our programmes are designed create opportunities for young peoples personal, social and educational development. Please read below, visit our website www.derbys-fire.gov.uk , or contact us directly to find out more about us. Youth Engagement Scheme (YES!) We deliver our very own Youth Engagement Scheme (YES!) which is a partnership project led by the Derbyshire Fire & Rescue service. The YES! scheme is targeted at young people aged 13-16 years who may have low self-esteem, be at risk of exclusion, disengaged with education, or may be young carers. The YES! programme is an 8 session, 1 day per week scheme which works with many partners within Derbyshire from the referral stage through to the delivery of the scheme. Through a mix of practical and classroom activities the students gain an understanding of Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service's 'drill type' activities and our partners help deliver a wide variety of other units that are aimed at improving the students self-confidence/self-esteem and promote teamwork and mutual cooperation. Through the YES! Scheme we also aim to contribute to the following outcomes: Reduce anti-social behaviour Improve school and work placement attendance levels Develop an understanding and appreciation for the communities in which the young people live Develop an aspiration for a more positive future Fire Cadets Our Youth Support Workers also oversee the Fire Cadet Units within Derbyshire which are based at Chesterfield, Staveley, Shirebrook, Nottingham Road and Ilkeston Fire Stations. The Cadets ages range from 14- 18 years and like the YES! schemes the Cadet Units operate during term time only. Through a mix of practical and classroom activities the Cadet students gain an understanding of Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service's 'drill type' activities and can achieve a BTEC qualification. Our Youth Support Workers support the Lead Instructors who run the sessions. FireSafe FireSafe is our Firesetter Intervention Scheme aimed at helping children and young people understand and control the feelings and circumstances that lead them to set fires. It has been running since 1995 and is designed to advise children and young people with firesetting behaviours. Our advisors will also help the child or young person to understand the results of their actions through a series of visits and educational exercises at the child's home or other neutral venue.
