Beccles Town Football Club is an English football club based in Beccles, Suffolk. They are nicknamed 'The Wherrymen', because Beccles was once a busy trading town on the River Waveney. The club are currently members of the Anglian Combination Premier Division and play at College Meadow. The club is affiliated to the Suffolk County FA.HistoryThey were established in 1919 as Beccles F.C. and won the Suffolk Senior Cup in 1922. They played in the FA Cup for seven seasons in the 1950s whilst members of the Norfolk & Suffolk League, reaching the Third Qualifying Round three times. They joined the Anglian Combination when the Norfolk & Suffolk League merged with the East Anglian League in 1964. Beccles won the Anglian Combination Division Three in 1971–72, gaining promotion to Division Two. After finishing runners-up the following season the club reached Division One. The club finished runners-up in Division One in 1976–77 and again 1985–86. During this time, Beccles antered the FA Vase four times and reached the First Round in 1979. Beccles is a market town and civil parish in the Waveney District of the English county of Suffolk. The town is shown on the milestone as 109 miles (175 km) from London via the A145 Blythburgh and A12 road, 98 miles (158 km) northeast of London as the crow flies, 16 miles (26 km) southeast of Norwich, and 33 miles (53 km) north northeast of the county town of Ipswich. Nearby towns include Lowestoft to the east and Great Yarmouth to the northeast. The town lies on the River Waveney on the edge of The Broads National Park.It had a population at the 2001 census of 9,746. Worlingham is a suburb of Beccles. The combined population of Beccles and Worlingham in 2005 was estimated at 13,580. Beccles is twinned with Petit-Couronne in France.HistoryThe name is conjectured to be derived from Becc-Liss* . However, also offered is Bece-laes* . Once a flourishing Saxon riverport, it lies in the Waveney valley and is a popular boating centre. The town was granted its Charter in 1584 by Elizabeth I.
