St. Ambrose College

St. Ambrose College

St. Ambrose College is a voluntary aided, Christian Brothers' Roman Catholic boys' grammar school located in Hale Barns, Altrincham, Greater Manchester, England. It was founded in 1946. In 2005, St Ambrose College became a mathematics and computing college. In 2012 the school became an academy, and was completely re-built.History of Child AbuseIn December 2012, the college was implicated in a child sex abuse case involving teaching staff carrying out alleged acts of abuse both on and off school grounds, although no current staff are said to be involved. More than fifty former pupils contacted police, either as victims of, or witnesses to, sexual abuse. The alleged sexual abuse, including molestation of children while corporal punishment was administered, stemmed from 1962 onwards and continued over four decades.HistorySt. Ambrose College, was founded during the second world war, by a group of evacuee De La Salle Brothers. Arriving in Hale in 1940 from Les Vauxbelets College in Guernsey, the Brothers, and a small group of students soon found suitable accommodation and re-established their school.Towards the end of June 1940, when the Channel Islands were about to be occupied by the German army, the parents of boys attending Les Vauxbelets College, were asked to decide whether they should allow their sons to be evacuated to Great Britain or keep them at home with all the attendant risks (hunger, forced labour, etc.).
Altrincham Grammar School for Girls

Altrincham Grammar School for Girls

Cavendish Road, Bowdon,, Altrincham ,
Today's pupils are encouraged to maintain the highest standards of the past while preparing to play their part in the increasingly technological world of tomorrow. Enjoyment of learning, self-discipline, concern for others and opportunities for leadership lie at the heart of the school's ethos. Every girl is valued equally and encouraged to develop her potential to the full. The school is situated in Bowdon and has excellent all weather sports facilities adjacent on the Devisdale. These include two full size all weather hockey pitches, a grass hockey pitch, six netball courts and a long jump pit. The hockey pitches are used for athletics and rounders in summer and the netball courts provide six tennis courts. A block for English, Drama, ICT and Mathematics opened in March 2002 and a new library was completed in September 2002. In November 2006 a £2.4m building programme was completed, which include three state-of-the-art science laboratories, a wonderful new staff common room and dining area, and a stunning reception area. The old Breeze Hill house was demolished and a new build erected in 2011. Here can be found History and Geography classrooms, an ICT suite and a state-of-the-art training facility which, since AGGS became a Teaching School, is in constant use. In our most recent Ofsted inspection in September 2008 the school was judged 'outstanding' in every area: overall effectiveness, achievement and standards, personal development and wellbeing and quality of provision.
