Visiting Writers at the University of Stirling

University of Stirling, Stirling ,
For over 40 years creative writing has thrived as a subject at the University of Stirling, and over the years a range of well-known writers and poets have both visited and worked in Stirling, among them perhaps most notably Norman MacCaig who worked at the university for eight years. At the moment the University is proud to count the Scottish poet Kathleen Jamie and the New Zealand novelist Paula Morris as members of its staff. Over the years Stirling has made it a point in inviting a number of authors and poets to read their work at the university, and we wish to continue this practice for years to come. This March we will welcome Andrew Greig to the University, and later on this year we will play host to the international poetry conference ‘Poetry and Melancholia’ which will bring poets and academics alike from all over the world to Scotland's Gateway to the Highlands. Not surprisingly the university was the first in Scotland to offer degree credit for creative writing dissertations, and as from the autumn semester 2011 the English Studies programme will add an MLitt in Creative Writing to its list of groundbreaking post-graduate programmes.

The Institute of Aquaculture brings together and develops cross-disciplinary, world class researchers and students to meet the wide range of challenges faced as aquaculture grows to meet global demands. Research focuses on fundamental questions relating to strategies for sustainable aquaculture, whether in modern commercial markets or in feeding poor communities in developing countries. Fundamental research on environments, reproduction, genetics, aquatic health, nutrition and feed supplies, on production systems, on markets and value chains, and on social and economic impacts all play significant roles. We have grown steadily over the last 35 years to our present size of more than 110 staff and 120 postgraduate students. We have built up a first class international reputation in teaching, research, commercial contract research and consultancy, with an annual operating budget of almost £5 million. Our core-funded is from SHEFC via the University and we also receive substantial research and project funding from Research Councils, UK Government departments (DFID, DEFRA), the European Community and from a wide variety of national and international research organisations, foundations and trusts and industry. We have links with many other academic institutions, throughout Europe, and also with the Asian Institute of Technology and the Aquatic Animal Health Research Institute (Thailand), the National Agricultural University, Mymensingh (Bangladesh), the College of Fisheries, Mangalore (India), Bunda College Univ of Malawi, Univ of Science and Technology UST , Kumasi (Ghana) the Universidad Michocana, Morelia (Mexico) and Myazaki University (Japan). We have had considerable direct involvement with the industry during its rapid expansion and evolution and we provide disease and environmental management services to industry as well as project design, development and management through Stirling Aquaculture for which we received the Queens Award for Industry in 1990.

Stirling High School

Stirling High School

Stirling High School is a state high school for 11-18 year olds run by Stirling Council in Stirling, Scotland. It is one of seven high schools in the Stirling district, and has approximately 972 pupils. It is located on Torbrex Farm Road, near Torbrex Village in the suburbs of Stirling, previously being situated on the old volcanic rock where Stirling Castle lies and on Ogilvie Road. The headteacher of the school is Patricia Scullion. The school operates a house system. The three houses are Douglas, Randolph and Stewart.Originally established for the training of ecclesiastics, it began as the seminary of the Church of the Holy Rude, founded in the reign of David I in 1129. Both the church and school, along with those of Perth, were brought under the charge of the monks of the Church of the Holy Trinity of Dunfermline in 1173.New school buildingsThe school now operates from a new building on the former site of Williamfield Cricket Pitches, ex-home to Stirling County Cricket Club. Stirling High School had an official opening ceremony on 26 June 2008, which consisted of a ribbon cutting by former pupil, Kirsty Young.PFIThe new school was financed by the Public Private Finance initiative, which involves the current site being sold to developers. Over the following years, the developers then lease the school back to the council. This agreement see the school's facilities management being carried out by FES FM Ltd rather than Stirling Council. Teaching, administration and catering will continue to be provided by Stirling Council.
