Loughton Cricket Club was 130 years old in 2009. The club was formed in 1879. We are a non-profit making club and all funds raised are invested in improving the facilities at the ground. We have a five year Development Plan and set ourselves achievable goals. We have within the last ten years built a new pavilion, refurbished our thatch changing rooms and replaced our old scorebox with a modern electronic scoring system. We also set about a programme of training coaches and attracting youngsters as well as forming a Women's team. We are one of only a few Essex Clubs to still play in a picturesque town centre location. The thatch pavilion is over 80 years old. We now run five League sides on Saturdays. Our first XI is in The Premier Division of the Shepherd Neame Essex Premier League. The League is recognised by the English Cricket Board. In the Premier League we finished 3rd in 2003 and 4th in 2004. Our Women's team is the strongest in Essex and plays in the National South League. We have three international standard practice nets and a completely renovated eighteen pitch cricket square. We were one of the first clubs in Essex to achieve Clubmark in 2003 and in 2007 completed the process of reaccreditation. Clubmark is the universally recognised mark of high quality junior sports clubs. Clubmark recognition ensures that children and young people can enjoy sport in a safe and fun environment giving peace of mind to parents and carers. Loughton runs junior sides from 9 to 16 and has over 30 active qualified coaches. We enter adult and junior indoor competition throughout the winter. We are always looking to strengthen all our sides and to provide competitive and social cricket at all levels of ability.

Roding Karate Club is a well-established karate club based in Essex and has been running since 1976. We study the Wado-Ryu (Way of Peace) style of karate. The Roding Karate Club was started by Sensei Ray Barrow (6th Dan). Ray started to learn karate as he was inspired by watching Bruce Lee. He trained under Sensei Shiomitsu (9th Dan), Sensei Yoshitsugu Shinohara (8th Dan) and various other instructors. The club has now expanded with several clubs running across the London and Essex area and is involved in national and international karate competitions. Loughton Karate Club was launched in 2006 by Sensei Jenny Wilson (1st Dan). From 2009 onwards, Sensei Mike Exford (2nd Dan) started to become involved with the club. Roding Karate Club teach with patience and understanding. Students are encouraged to follow the curriculum, so that grading becomes easy for them. What is Karate? 'Karate is a martial art system in which all possible parts of the body and all the possible movements which a human body can perform are to be used'. Kara - Empty and Te - Hand/Technique. Empty Hand - A combat art without using any weapons. What is Wado-Ryu? A Japanese martial art founded by Sensei Hironori Ohtsuka in 1934. He developed Wado-Ryu after studying the Samurai martial art of Jiu-jitsu, and Shotokan (another style of Karate). This combination, according to Sensei Ohstuka, is a softer, more natural means of self-protection. The full name of the style is Wado-Ryu Karate-Do. The term Wado-Ryu means "way of peace" or "way of harmony", indicating Sensei Ohtsuka's original intention to use training in Wado-Ryu as a means of solving problems in a non-violent way. Karate-Do means "way of the empty hand", as Karate is, for the most part, studied without the use of weapons.
