Oakdale Comprehensive School

Oakdale Comprehensive School

Penmaen Road, Blackwood ,
Our school is situated on the outskirts of the village of Oakdale on the road linking Pontllanfraith and Crumlin. It occupies an elevated site, overlooking the Sirhowy Valley and the town of Blackwood. It was first opened in 1968 and has subsequently expanded with the addition of new teaching blocks. Oakdale is renowned for its strong community spirit which, as in other Welsh villages; emanated from its religious institutions and mining traditions. The Miners' Welfare, Library and Institute was built and financed from voluntary contributions, providing a focus for many activities. The original Institute has been carefully rebuilt within the grounds of the Welsh Folk Museum at St. Fagans. However the traditional miners' high regard for education remains embedded in the local culture and is enhanced by the strong links maintained with our partner primary schools. In 1975 the school became an 11 - 16 coeducational Comprehensive with post-16 provision available primarily at Coleg Gwent, Crosskeys located some seven miles away. The school is maintained by Caerphilly County Borough Council.
