St Mary's Church, Callington
For full list of services, please see below.
St. Mary’s is the Church of England building situated in the heart of Callington and is consecrated and dedicated to St. Mary the Blessed Virgin. The present Church was built shortly before 1438. According to old documents, however, there was a chapel in Callington in 1384 but at this period the parishioners had to bury their dead at St. Sampsons’ South Hill. In 1436 Nicholas Assheton, chief townsman at the time, together with other parishioners petitioned Bishop Lacey for a cemetery. This was granted in 1438 and it was thanks largely to Nicholas Assheton’s generosity and planning that the new church of St. Mary’s was built. Nicholas Assheton and his wife, Margaret, are buried beneath the Chancel floor under a marble slab inlaid with their brass effigies, now below a trap door in the raised chancel floor that is opened from time to time for viewing.
Our main service of the week is at 9.30 am on Sunday but we also have Morning Prayer on a Monday and a mid-week service on a Wednesday followed by coffee and informal chat. St. Mary’s is also here for Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals. There are House Groups and a Lent course each year along with various activities to raise monies for church expenses and charities.
‘Sunday Morning Live’ meets every Sunday morning during term time in the Town Hall at 9.20 am. Secondary school age members have a monthly programme of social activities, e.g. Games/quiz evenings, visits to see the Plymouth Raiders basketball games, bowling etc. The younger children also have occasional social get togethers. The Leaders of Sunday Morning Live also run holiday clubs and the annual Crib Service on Christmas Eve is always very popular.
