With a Hollywood Prom Party theme, featuring a red carpet to strut down, and the crowning of Enigma’s Prom King and Queen, the night promises to be fun and glamorous, and most of all, an unforgettable commemoration of a magnificent three years. Mercedes Mussard caught up with the founder of Enigma to find out more about the club night’s history, and what to expect from the upcoming birthday bash. What inspired you to start Enigma? I understand promoting safe sex was a key part. The fact that Colchester was lacking a place where the gay community could go and have a great night out without having to travel miles to either Chelmsford or London. I initially started Enigma at Karma nightclub in 2008 before moving it to Sky Rooms in early 2009. I worked closely with the Terrance Higgins Trust to help promote safe sex and awareness. Have you found the nights are popular for everyone, no matter what their orientation? The idea behind Enigma was obviously for the LGBT community to have a place to go, but also for the general public to come and enjoy. Enigma has a great, relaxed atmosphere; a place where people can come and let their hair down and dance the night away. Sky Rooms is the perfect place as it’s right on the High Street (ideal for passing trade), instead of being hidden out of the way down the back alleys. Regardless of the person’s orientation there’s a place for them at Enigma without fear of judgement. Stuart Brown with Enigma revellers What do you love most about your job? Being able to bring a great night to Colchester for all to enjoy! I get the chance to use my artistic skills and to enjoy the night even though I’m working. The best part is standing back and watching everyone having a great night, laughing, dancing and looking forward to another monthly dose. What have been the highlights over the last three years? That’s a difficult question as I always enjoy my nights, but I would have to say the second birthday which I themed as a Lady Ga Ga Paparazzi Party. It was amazing seeing people from all over come to party at Enigma. I (for the first time) dragged up as Ga Ga! Lots of people made a great effort to dress to the theme. I also had an amazing act, The Killer Queens, who performed live with backing dancers and super quick costume changes. A fabulous night was had by all! How do you get ideas for your themed nights? I’ve always been an artistic person and I have a wild imagination. I also watch a lot of movies so I guess my ideas stem from that. And I never like doing the same thing all other bars do! I like themes with a difference; each year I do a beach party but always with an Enigma twist. Last year was Treasure Island and this year was Jungle Fever. I also always have a school theme in January. Last year was High School Mania and this year was Jocks and Cheerleaders, so there is always something fun and original. Catch DJ Robby Dee at Enigma's 3rd Birthday Party You’re hosting a fabulous Hollywood Prom night on 24th of this month, what are you most looking forward to? I am very excited about this year’s birthday event as it’s a bit more formal than usual but obviously the dress code will be optional. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s fabulous outfits. I have a new DJ on the night who is big on the gay scene, Robby Dee, and a spectacular live singer Laura Jepp. I’m looking forward to a night of glitz and glam, and as always, more fantastic memories and pictures to treasure. Why should someone come to Enigma at Sky Rooms and what can they expect? People should come to Enigma at Sky Rooms as it’s something different for them to experience. People can expect to have a fun night with a great, relaxed atmosphere, fantastic music and amazing people to dance and mingle with. There is nothing like Enigma in town and you are free to be whoever you want to be. I feel very happy and privileged to have been able to start this night and to gain such support from my great friends, especially my amazing parents who have always encouraged me to be myself. They are always on the door, welcoming people in, and making such a great effort to dress to the themes and make the nights so special. Long may it continue to grow! Find out more about Enigma, visit their Facebook page. The Hollywood Prom Party takes place at Sky Rooms on Saturday 24th September. ****************************************************************** Review of the night:2008 'Enigma' - the brand new gay night in Colchester! If you live in Colchester you have probably been mourning the loss of The Fox, wondering what on earth ever possessed you to venture into Freedom, and wishing that there was an established, great gay weekend night in town where you could go with your mates, gay and straight, and boogie the night away...well, fear no more, because now the fantastic new gay night 'Enigma' has well and truely come to town! Living in Braintree and working in Chelmsford, I have tended to remain very loyal to Smiths2 in Chelmsford in recent years, as it is an amazing venue with a great atmosphere, but on Saturday 29th November I decided to take the plunge and be adventurous by taking my wife, Brooke, to 'Enigma', in Colchester. Having heard great things about this new gay night, I was ready to be impressed - and it didn't let me down! Brooke and I spent the night wandering around, chatting to people (who were all really friendly) and having a boogie - a great night, and one that didn't involve any click-ey groups or snobby queens I am pleased to note. The best thing about the whole night was that it was on a weekend, a Saturday night, so there is no getting up in the morning, and it makes going into Colchester town worth the trip if you live a bit further out. Promoter of 'Enigma', Stuart Brown, says that nowhere needed an established great gay night more than Colchester, and now that I have been there myself I have to agree - Colchester has been screaming out for a great venue and cool DJs that cater to the gay community in Essex and offer something more than just overpriced alcopops and cheesy tracks that we have heard a thousand times before. 'Enigma' offers a mix of Pop, Dance ,Club Classix, no monotonous garage thumping away, and great drinks deals! >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> evening gazzete article for december 2009 Enigma club night's grotto is sure to get you festive 8:00pm Friday 18th December 2009 By Neil D'Arcy-Jones » A CHRISTMAS grotto with a difference is promised by the promoters of top club night, Enigma. Their monthly dose of good fun and good music returns to the Sky Rooms, in Colchester’s High Street, tomorrow, rounding off a year which has seen the gay night celebrate its first birthday and an increasing attendance. Last month’s theme was a glow party, but for December it couldn’t be anything but Christmas. Organiser Stuart Brown said: “It’s a big, Christmas Enigma wonderland. “I’m theming the night as a festive party, setting up the foyer as a Christmas grotto where people can have photos taken. “I’ve also got Enigma elves, who will be taking shots round the club, lots of Christmas giveaways and DJ Tony Armstrong on the decks.” Singer Natalie Cook returns to the venue, following the success of her appearance at the club’s first birthday bash. Stuart started the night in September 2008, and worked closely with the Terrence Higgins Trust and local gay and lesbian societies to produce an event which delivered a message about safe sex, but also provided a great night out. Doors open at 9.30pm and the night runs until the last diehard dancers leave at 3am. Entry is £5. Because a year on from it’s first night, Enigma’s promoter Stuart Brown has seen the clientele for the gay night go from strength to strength. Starting off at Karma in St Helen’s Lane, Colchester, Stuart launched the night last September, working closely with the Terrence Higgins Trust and local gay and lesbian societies to produce an event which delivered a message about safe sex, but also provided a great night out. Enigma moved to the Sky Rooms in Colchester’s High Street in May this year and with a collection of top cabaret names and some of the circuit’s best DJs, the club night has become one of the biggest of its kind in the area. Last month saw a set by Brighton favourite DJ Gabbi and resident DJ Tony Armstrong, a regular at similar nights, such as G-A-Y in London and Bliss in Brighton. Tony’s back tomorrow, spinning a mixture of dance anthems, club classics and R’n’B, and joining him on the decks will be special guest DJ Missy B, who many will remember for her electric sets at the Fox and Hounds, and Betty’s Nightclub. Stuart says: “It’s going to be a pretty big night as it’s the first birthday of Enigma. As you would expect, we are celebrating it big time and we’re theming the night as Back to the Nineties, with classic tracks from the era. Enigma’s First Birthday takes place at the Sky Rooms, High Street, Colchester, from 9.30pm until 3am. Entry is £5 all night. For more information, e-mail enigmaexperience @live.com l Enigma certainly won’t be resting on its birthday laurels, with a Halloween special planned for the next club night on October 30, so get those witches hats and pumpkins at the ready. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Enigma Experience is back in Colchester 2:00pm Friday 22nd May 2009 THE Enigma Experience is back – and bigger and better than ever. Run by local promoter Stuart Brown, it has now moved to the Sky Rooms, in Colchester High Street and for its relaunch has booked one of the best cabaret artists on the late-night circuit, Shiva Queen. Stuart said: “The evening is a gay night, but open to everyone really who likes good music and likes to have fun. “I’m delighted we’ve got Shiva Queen coming down from London for the first night. Shiva is a regular performer at clubs such as Heaven and Ghost, so it’s a bit of a coup for us to get her.” Stuart said the idea behind the club was to promote safe sex. It started last September and worked closely with the Terrence Higgins Trust and local gay and lesbian societies to produce a night which delivered a message but also provided a great night out. Stuart added: “The town was crying out for a good gay night, because people were having to travel either to Chelmsford, London or further for a great club night. Now they’ve got one on their own doorsteps.” DJ Tony Armstrong, a regular at similar nights as G-A-Y in London and Bliss in Brighton, will be spinning a mixture of dance anthems, club classics and R&B. Stuart hopes Enigma, which runs from 9.30pm tomorrow until to 3am, will become a monthly fixture, with the next one likely to be held on June 27. For details, e-mail enigma experience@live
