The SCOTTISH NATIONAL PARTY was established in Glasgow on 7 Apr. 1934, with the merger of the National Party of Scotland (founded on 11 Feb. 1928) and the Scottish Party (formed 1932). The principal founders were John MacCormick, Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham, Roland E. Muirhead, the Duke of Montrose, James Valentine, the novelist Compton Mackenzie, poets Hugh MacDiarmid (Christopher Grieve) and Lewis Spence, Florence Marian McNeill and the Party's first leader, Sir Alexander MacEwan.
