SAM CARTER Winner of the 2010 BBC Folk Awards Horizon Award for Best Newcomer. Since Sam Carter released his debut album ‘Keepsakes’ in 2009, there has been a mounting excitement about this songwriter, guitarist and singer. Armed with a ‘killer voice’ (Nitin Sawhney) and the ability to play his guitar ‘like a harp’ (Time Out), as well as an unerring ability to put his personal experiences into a wider perspective, Sam continues to impress audiences and fellow artists alike. Sam Carter released his new album ‘The No Testament’ in August 2012. ‘Three years on [from his debut album Keepsakes] the exemplary musicianship is bolder, the vocal arrangements more striking… as penetrating as Richard Thompson’s best work’ - 9/10 Uncut www.samcartermusic.co.uk GREG RUSSELL & CIARAN ALGAR Greg Russell and Ciaran Algar, BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award 2013 winners, are two of the most talented up and coming folk musicians in the UK, and together they draw on a range of influences to create exciting music with energy and delicacy. Russell and Algar recently released their debut album ‘The Queen’s Lover’. “Both Russell and Algar are exceptional musicians and have, on their debut, shown maturity and an understanding of their chosen genre that is rare in people so young. That Russell is also blessed with one of the best voices this country currently has to offer is an added bonus.” – Malcolm Carter, pennyblackmusic. “Ciaran’s playing style might best be described as dextrous; it’s unusually responsive for someone of his tender years, and it turns out a pretty ideal match for Greg’s own equally dextrous guitar stylings.” – Pete Fyfe, folking.com. “A mature, confident and assured debut album, far beyond their years. There’s an admirable honesty and sincerity as they tackle old songs, trad pieces, instrumentals and self-penned compositions.” – Paul Strange, Acoustic www.russellalgar.co.uk MATT QUINN A 2012 graduate of the Newcastle Folk Music degree, Matt Quinn is fast becoming a well-known name on the English folk scene. He has been performing for the last 7 years in various bands including Dogan & the Boombox Karavan and the Eliza Carthy Ceilidh Band (with their themed ceilidhs at UK Folk Festivals). He has performed at a wide range of venues from folk clubs across the country up to main stages at Sidmouth, Beverley, Warwick, and Broadstairs festivals. A multi-instrumentalist, Matt plays melodeon, mandolin, fiddle and sings. In late 2011, Matt began making his debut solo album 'Broom Abundance' which will be released in the autumn of 2012. "Matt Quinn is the leading light for the next generation of quintessentially English melodeon players" - Simon Care (Edward II, Tickled Pink) www.mattquinnmusic.co.uk JIM CAUSLEY Five times BBC Radio 2 Folk Award nominee Jim Causley is a singer/accordionist who is passionate about traditional song and particularly that of his native Devon. Previous incarnations include The Devil's Interval and Mawkin:Causley and he has recorded with the likes of Waterson:Carthy, Show of Hands, John McCusker and David Rotheray of Beautiful South fame. Recent projects have included touring with Steve Knightley and Kate Rusby. Jim is reknowned for his cheeky stage presence and his rich singing voice akin to the fruitiest of ciders! www.jimcausley.co.uk DAVID GIBB & ELLY LUCAS David Gibb and Elly Lucas are an exciting young duo who play a mixture of original and re‐worked traditional folk material. They hail from Derbyshire and have previously toured the UK extensively as part of David Gibb & The Pony Club. David plays the guitars, melodeon and sings; Elly plays fiddle, viola and also sings. From these minimal resources, the twosome produce distinctive vocal leads, haunting harmonies and a quite dense instrumental sound. The pair were finalists in the BBC Young Folk Awards 2011 and, on the road, have supported such acts as Cara Dillon, Chris Wood,Coope, Boyes and Simpson, Jez Lowe, and Megson. Their debut album 'Old Chairs To Mend' was released in 2012. 'The duo’s approach oozes charm, exploring a welcome darker side.' - UNCUT Magazine 'An instantly likeable record, with a freshness, vitality and exuberance' - Properganda! www.gibbandlucas.co.uk HELEN ENGLISH & JOHN WALTHAM plus DAVE GOULDER Helen and John both have a lifetime’s background in folk music and song, and have come together in recent years to explore the possibilities offered by the combination of Helen’s Celtic harp playing and John’s singing. The result is an eclectic repertoire ranging from traditional local material to more recent compositions from both sides of the Atlantic and beyond, all of it delivered in John’s relaxed, unhurried style and counter pointed by the rich tone of Helen’s harp. Singer/songwriter Dave Goulder is probably best known for his song 'The January Man' which has been recorded by artists including Martin Carthy, Christy Moore, Bert Jansch, Tony Rose and Lau with Karine Polwart. Dave now lives in Scotland so this is a great chance to catch him in the Westcountry. www.davegoulder.co.uk PLUS Dancing from NORTHGATE RAPPER - www.northgaterapper.co.uk and FIRESTONE APPALACHIAN - www.firestonedance.co.uk
