I have lived and worked in and around Leigh all of my life. My artwork is born of my interest in the geography of our coastline and its fragility.
The mystery of what lies beneath the waves is a powerful motive in my artwork, as too is the concept of the power of the sea.
I am continually inspired by the energy embodied by water in its role as a vehicle, creator, natural sculptor, destroyer and healer.
I am fascinated by the geography and geology of the seabed of the Thames estuary, and how that defines the journey and rhythm
of the water.
The evidence of how the water answers the question posed by the geographical point where the river Thames meets the North sea, is all around
us. It is evident within the fragile eco-system of the shallow North sea and fertile river bed of the Thames. The organic debris and man made flotsam and jetsam left on the shore, the scores of shipwrecks in the estuary and coastal erosion are just small human observations of the properties of the sea.
There is so much more, yet to be discovered and defined.
I find that by working at the scene in natural light, conducive in allowing me to translate the energy of the environment around me onto the canvas.
I work in mixed media (oils, acrylics, ink, glue, mud and sand). This allows me to work within a time frame compatible with the elements, allowing me to capture what I am seeing as it happens.
