Taekwondo is a martial art which originates from South Korea, where it is the national sport. Taekwondo literally translates into 'the art of hand and foot'. It is practiced in over 200 countries around the world and officially became a core Olympic Sport at the Athens Olympics in 2000. Great Britain secured a Gold Medal (Jades Jones) and a Bronze Medal (Lutalo Muhammad) at London 2012. Classes are held in the main sports hall at Debden Park High School, Willingale Road, Loughton on Monday and Wednesday evenings 6.30-8.00pm. Senior classes (Blue Belt and above) are Friday evenings 6.30-8.00pm. At the club we practise both the traditional aspects of Taekwondo, which include kicking, blocking, striking, self defence and destruction, along with the combative sport element, where students practice competitive Taekwondo in a safe environment. We also practice Poomsae which part of the traditional side of Taekwondo, puts the movements into a logical sequence and performed against an imaginary opponent. Poomsae is used as a benchmark of a students ability as well as also a competitive, performance based discipline where students can compete against others. All of the above is blended with a mixture of fun and fitnesss! Come down and check it out for yourself! :)
