The Students’ Union is a democratic organisation that is student led and student focused. Its function is to facilitate, empower and support students in organising themselves whether that is to produce a creative magazine such as Poda Poda, to run campaigns such as Sussex Against Sweat Shops or Students Against Sexual Harassment, to form a sports club/team like the Sussex Ultimate Frisbee team, the Mohawks, or to be part of one of the liberation groups such as the LGBTQ group or Womens’ group. It also aims to represent students and campaign for progressive change on a University and National level to improve Students lives. Recently the Union successfully campaigned to keep the campus crèche open and has been fighting the Government’s plans to raise tuition fees. It also provides students with services ranging from the Advice and Representation Centre which gives free and confidential advice to students for educational and welfare relating issues, facilitating student sports and societies to opening a new students’ lettings agency. The Union is directed by students through policy made at regular all student meetings, through referenda and through the 41 elected students who represent the student body in the Union at meetings, which all students can attend, called Council.

The Life Science Society (supported by the Society of Biology) is the society for all Life Sciences students, so if you're studying: Biochemistry, Biosciences, Biology, Biomedical Science, Chemistry, Ecology and Environment, Medical Neuroscience, Neuroscience or Neuroscience with Cognitive Science then this is your society! As the biggest and best school in the uni we aim to have the biggest and best society in the uni. Throughout the year we will put on regular socials, hold fundraising events (in aid of macmillan cancer support), international social trips (Amsterdam) and even academia related trips (Longleat, Whipsnade Zoo). We would also like invite interesting speakers to hold talks and workshops regarding their careers and other life science related topics. URF is the student radio station at the University of Sussex. It's one of the oldest student radio stations in the country and is also one of the only stations that doesn’t playlist it's shows. Based in Norwich House, URF broadcasts across campus, Brighton and the world via www.urfonline.com. Student DJs determine the music policy, as URF is run entirely by student volunteers. So whether you're a big reggae fan or prefer a bit of R&B they'll probably be a show for you on URF. URF also runs great termly events, including the Sunday Night Pub Quiz at East Slope Bar and DJing at Falmer Bar Cocktail Night on Thursdays. Getting involved in student radio is not only fun, but can be incredibly rewarding, looks great on your CV and past members have gone on to work for Juice 107.2FM and the BBC. There are lots of opportunities to get involved in the station - from hosting your own radio show to joining one of our teams (Music, News, PR and Events, Tech, Production).
