Taken over by Sarah Love in 2005 ABC was first established in 1990. The Turing project at Glyndwr is partially funded by the British Computer Society (BCS) Education Bursary in Commemoration of Alan Turing and in conjunction with Techniquest. Alan Turing is widely regarded by many as the founder of Computer Science; he is largely remembered for his work at Bletchly Park, Britain’s code breaking centre during World War 2. During his time there he devised numerous techniques for the deciphering of German naval ciphers. The BCS Education Bursary is the first of several initiatives to support schools to teach and promote the importance of Computer Science as an academic discipline. Glyndwr University was fortunate enough to receive a portion of this bursary and so the “Turing at Glyndwr” project was born. The project will develop tutorials using Robot C, a high level programming language used to give commands to Lego Robots, enabling users to instruct the robots to follow paths, traverse mazes and even dance. These tutorials will be presented in house and at local schools to encourage student’s interest in Computer Science. Once these presentations have been completed, the tutorials will be handed over to the experienced staff at Techniquest, where they will be offered alongside their already hugely successful Lego Education series.
