The Institute is the UK's largest single academic group providing transport courses and training. In a typical year there are around 500 students taking undergraduate modules, 100 students on Masters programmes, up to 50 registered PhD students, and dozens of delegates participating in short courses. Through this, the Institute makes a significant contribution to the skills base in the global transport sector, improving both the quantity and quality of transport professionals internationally.

Leeds College of Art is an independent, specialist and dynamic place to study Higher Education and Further Education courses. The entire College is dedicated to the study of art, design and crafts. Over the last 160 years, we've built a national and international reputation as an exciting alternative to traditional universities, consistently produced the artists and designers of the future: sculptors Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth studied with us in the 1920s and, more recently Marcus Harvey, Turner Prize-winner Damien Hirst, Danny Sangra and Omar Kashoura were students here. Right at the heart of one of the most exciting cities in the country, we're smaller than most universities, so the atmosphere is friendlier and you get plenty of personal attention to offer you a uniquely focused learning experience and big enough to offer you all the opportunities, resources and support you're looking for.

The music centre provides low cost music tuition to students of all ages and abilities. We currently offer tuition on drums, guitar, keyboard, singing, woodwind and strings, as well as specialist classes for under 8s.We also have a wide range of ensembles and bands, and a mid-week community orchestra in Morley. We are trialling song writing and beatboxing classes in September, with a live performance in Leeds planned for early December. These classes are designed with under 14s in mind, and start at the end of September. We have a music technology project starting at the South Leeds Youth Hub on Middleton road, LS10 3JA. This project start in Early September, and will be working with mac computers and music technology software. We aim to provide a first start- to give everyone who wants to try an instrument the opportunity to do that. Our classes cover the basics of playing their instrument, reading music and performance. The music centre is a good opportunity to enhance skills learnt in school music lessons, and to learn new skills from working with new people. The music centre is also a good experience for more advanced musicians, who can take more of a leadership role in our ensembles. This year we are looking to provide musicians with the opportunity to form their own ensemble, and to work in small bands or chamber music groups. We believe that ensemble playing is very different from individual tuition, and want to encourage our students to learn in as many ways as possible. The South Leeds Music Centre’s ensembles have a busy season of performances lined up, and are always looking for new musicians to perform. We have a series of public performances planned throughout the year, including remembrance day, the Christmas light switch-on and our Christmas and summer concerts.

Just 7 minutes walk from campus and 15 minutes walk from the city centre, Montague Burton has shared bathroom facilities, and each bedroom has its own wash basin. There is also a covered, outdoor BBQ/picnic area on site. Some quiet/postgraduate blocks available.
