Leeds Construction and Logistics UTC

Leeds Construction and Logistics UTC

Leeds UTC – Construction and Supply Chain Logistics, is partnered by Norbert Dentressagle, Laing O’Rourke, Langdon’s Industries (Nagel Group), and Price Waterhouse Coopers to date. The UTC’s main curricular diet will consist on the core curriculum (Maths, English, science, sport – GCSE etc.) with a particular focus on Sustainable and Low Carbon Technologies. Supply Chain Logistics specialism: • Environmental Sustainability. • Assessing the external impacts of freight logistics. • Carbon auditing of companies, supply chains and products. • Evaluation and internalising the environmental costs of logistics. • The restructure of road freight networks within supply chains. • Transformation of freight to “greener” transport modes – rail and waterways. • Development of “greener” vehicles, aircraft and ships. • Efficient route planning, “greener” fuels and increased fuel efficiency. • Waste management and city logistics. Construction specialism: • The nature and definition of the built environment in terms of education, finance, green spaces. • Relevance of sustainability in terms of sustainable design locally and nationally. • Development of a sustainable built environment. • Social and economic issues. • Business and employment opportunities and people investment. • Safe guarding of trade and professional skills and the training of new technologies. • Sustainable construction techniques. Our mission is to secure more Industrial and University support to present the first specialist Construction and Logistics establishment, in the UK. Serving Yorkshire and based in Leeds, upon a successful bid, we will be ready to open in September 2015 with an estimated opening capacity of 250 learners, and our preferred site is located in the LS9, Aire Valley area of Leeds. Aire Valley - aka Leeds Enterprise Zone - is situated at the heart of the Leeds City Region. The Leeds Enterprise Zone is poised to deliver up to 7,000 new jobs and stimulate development of the wider Aire Valley area, one of the biggest regeneration areas in the North of England. The vision is to, “develop successful, creative and self-sustaining individuals who understand the necessity to combine a responsible work ethic with qualifications and hard work to realise aspirations and fulfil potential.” We will do this by engaging employer partners and local, sub-regional and regional stakeholders to drive an employer led curriculum, training young people from 14 to 19 in core GCSE’s Maths, English and Science as well as specialist qualifications in Construction (Btec, CAA, City & Guilds) and Supply Chain Logistics (CILT). The location of Leeds UTC is key to the regeneration area of one of the most deprived areas of the city, giving opportunity to the young people of Leeds and Yorkshire allowing them to develop a sustainable and technically sound future. This will be tackled by accessing the local infrastructure and motorways such as the M62 to allow access to the school for businesses and students alike, a wholly inclusive and holistic approach to vocational education. Working with our partners, Leeds UTC will produce the next generation of Construction and Logistics technicians in the sectors of Sustainable and Low Carbon Technologies and tackle a generation of worklessness in the area. Our community work will see us up skilling the local and regional area from level 2 qualifications and upwards and work with FE and HE providers to feed learners directly into College or University, or with employer partners, to offer apprenticeships and higher apprenticeships respectively. Leeds UTC represents a unique opportunity for industry and education leaders to make a substantial difference to the education sector and more importantly the education of young people in Yorkshire, forever.
