The Birks Cinema

The Birks Cinema

15 Dunkeld Street, Aberfeldy ,
In April of 2013, The Birks Cinema will finally open its doors after a long, determined fundraising campaign by The Friends of The Birks Cinema. Their tireless efforts, and generous donations from the likes of the Big Lottery Fund and the Scottish Rural Development Program, raised the £1.7 million necessary to bring The Birks back to life. The cinema is currently entering its final weeks of redevelopment and our building contractors, Hadden Construction, are pulling out all the stops to get us there in time. We’re putting together a packed program of advance screenings for local residents from Aberfeldy as well as the surrounding area of Highland Perthshire including Dunkeld, Pitlochry and Kinloch Rannoch. We’re also extending invitations to our neighbours further down in Killin too. Keep an eye on our website - http://birkscinema.co.uk/ - for details of our initial program and what events we’ve got coming up. We’ll also be hiring staff throughout the coming months so keep your eyes peeled for the vacancies!

1000 Mile Journeys

1000 Mile Journeys

C/O Splash White Water Rafting Dunkeld Road, Aberfeldy ,
Inspirational journeys of 1000 miles on foot, bike, ski and by paddle in stunning locations and environments around the World. These journeys will all be off course a minimum of 1000 miles. The time taken to complete will be between 2 weeks and 3 months depending on mode of transport and difficulty. The journeys are not for super fit athletes although of course very fit people are welcome. They are for normal people who want to achieve something special in life. Preparation for these journeys is a key as the journey itself. Mental and physical preparation is essential for the vast majority. These journeys are 75% mental ability and 25% physical ability but obviously physical preparation will make the journey more enjoyable. I would suggest a minimum of 6 months for the average person. More if really unfit and less if already fit. Everyone who wishes to complete these journeys will have a long telephone conversation with myself prior to signing up. On the really physical ones we will also have training camps in the sunshine in Spain prior to the main journey. Lead time for these journeys is long. Recces normally happen 18 months in advance and the journeys will be marketed a year in advance. Applications will close 3 months prior to the start on most of the journeys. Size of party will be a maximum of 12 with the average being 8. Costs will range from £600pp to £6000pp depending on length of journey and the logistics of the journey. Charity. Sticking with being client led we will do these journeys for charity only if those taking part want to. I will not get involved in handling any charity monies, therefore, all fundraising if wanted will have to happen via the various online sites. Having said that I am very experienced in fundraising for charities via my other businesses so if you want to discuss please ask.

Smart Tree Services Scotland heavy horse logging and more

Smart Tree Services Scotland heavy horse logging and more

Tayside Crescent, Aberfeldy ,
Smart tree services specialises in difficult tree removal and using heavy horses for woodland and land management, using a combination of traditional and modern techniques. We excel in working on sensitive sites, nature reserves, parks or anywhere machinery is undesirable and a more sensitive approach is needed. We also carry out dry stone dyking and other ground works on agreement. Why carry out tree work? Using horses to extract logs was the main form of timber extraction in Scotland up until the late 1940's. Since then it has all but died out in favour of motorised equipment. Whilst large machinery is invaluable in the commercial foresting industry it is limited in it's ability to protect the woodland environment and eco-system. In recent years the British Horse Loggers have been committed to promoting Horse Logging as a low impact; environmentally sensitive method of extracting timber. As a rule we work the horses in two-hour sessions. It is recommended that a horse works no more than a 6 hours a day. Humans of course work longer and continue to work while the horse(s) rest. A typical day will start on site by 9.00am and finish at 5.00pm. Usually the horse(s) will have three working blocks during each day: Whether you require us to prune a tree, to combat disease, lift or lower it's crown, perhaps to increase volume of light, or to fell trees to facilitate a building project our highly qualified, & fully insured, staff will carry out a professional job with minimal disruption to you. • Felling • Pruning • Crown Reduction & Lifting • Stump Removal • Site Clearance • 24 7 STS Are able to respond quickly. Our preparations include a full site survey, production of risk assessments and of method statements, and a safety briefing for staff; Our services include • All timber extraction (first thinning through to final crop, firewood, coppice, wind blown) • Felling and extraction • Working alongside mechanical extraction methods e.g. snigging to trackside for further extraction The Benefits of using a professional horse logger to extract timber are • The low impact means Minimal ground disturbance • Selective thinning is economical as no extra trees are cut down than needed • Minimal noise • Can easily access steep and enclosed areas • Do not need big gateways and pathways for us to work • Ideal for wet, steep, rough and small plantations • Leaves no timber behind on the forest floor • Minimal disturbance to wildlife • No pollution of waterways Very effective on sensitive sites: • SSSIs • Nature reserves • Water courses • Archaeological sites • Public parks and pathways • National parks • Private estates
