The School Council at The Knights Templar School The school council at The Knights Templar School is a representative group of students who have been proposed and elected by their peers to represent their views and raise issues with the Senior Managers and Governors of the school. In September, each form group elects a representative. The School Council propose and take forward initiatives and projects on behalf of their peers, and be included in strategic planning and processes such as the School Development Plan. The object of an effective school council is to help students to: Enjoy and feel empowered by their education. Feel that the school responds to their needs and views. Have the opportunity to let adults know their feelings and opinions about issues that effect them Have a say in regards to decisions, and to play an active role in making their school a better place. Develop the skills through participation. Student Voice is well established at The Knights Templar School and involves lots of students in a whole range of different activities, at present there are 42 members of the school council who meet once per half term with the councils’ coordinator Mr. White. Students volunteer to be members in a diverse range of working groups, who meet more regularly. Here are just a few of the activities that students have taking part in at The Knights Templar School: School uniform. School behavior. Designed new homework diary Fund raising events. Attending governors meetings. Managing a budget. Interviewing and observing teachers who have applied to work at KTS. Students as Learning Partners; a scheme where students work closely with teachers to review their lessons, helping to improve teaching and learning. Energy and Sustainability – Reduce amount of Gas and Electricity the school uses, also looking into the use of solar panels and wind turbines. Installing a recyclable waste collection programme. Presentations in assemblies to year groups Year 7 to Year 13. Creating Christmas boxes in support of the Samaritans Purse appeal. School lunches. Meetings with catering staff.
