Independent Training Services was founded in 1981 as part of the council for Voluntary Service Employment Initiative. It expanded and developed to such an extent that in 1987 it was decided that a separate limited company needed to be formed and which became Barnsley Youth Development Service. In 1988, the Company applied for, and was granted, charitable status and became known as BYDA. In April 2002, the company name was changed to Independent Training Services Limited. Our core business is centred around the training of young people in a variety of vocational areas. In addition, we offer adult programmes and provide all our learners with support and guidance in Skills for Life, Job Search, Personal Development and other related issues. We have a dedicated team of staff who were chosen for their ability to work with learners who have a varied range of vocational experiences and academic achievements. All our staff hold relevant vocational and training qualifications and specialise in areas ranging from employer based assessment, vocational training, numeracy, literacy and quality improvement.

It is a 'voluntary aided school', which means the school is established by an organisation other than the Local Education Authority (LEA), in this case the Church of England. This gave the school specific rights and responsibilities which differ from those of non-aided schools. In particular, the school staff are appointed and employed by the governors rather than the LEA, with just over half of the governors themselves appointed by the Church of England Diocesan Board of Education and Dodworth Parochial Church Council. The school decides on their own admission arrangements and can give special emphasis to a Christian religious education, while not forgetting the importance of providing pupils with a broad understanding of the world and its peoples. The school foster close links with various Christian churches and denominations, which are represented by the Governing Body. The running costs of the school are met by the LEA and are funded in the usual way out of income tax and the council charge. However, the school buildings themselves belong to the Church of England and the governors are responsible for meeting the costs of any repairs or improvements that are carried out.

Our music lessons are conducted on a one to one basis with our teachers focused on giving good value tuition and achieving realistic results in a short space of time. We have been in business since early 2003 making us one of the most established music schools in the area. We continually improve our facilities and provide on going teacher training to our staff. We offer tuition for fun or for grades with an excellent pass rate. We act as an exam centre for Thames Valley University. We offer a wide variety of courses to suit everyone, from Short Courses and Evening Classes to ILM and Chidcare. We run a Level 2 Diploma in Progression and an outstanding Level 3 Access to HE Diploma which both start in September 2013.
