Samuel Lister was one of the City’s most influential historical figures. Through the invention of the Lister Nip Comb, Lister revolutionised the textile industry. He employed thousands throughout Bradford and the surrounding area and helped to transform the area from a small, rural town into the famous city it is today. Bec Treacher, the Academy’s Principal Designate, comments “we are delighted to announce that Samuel Lister has been chosen as the name for the Academy. I believe that this is a really appropriate name as Samuel Lister, was an innovator, an industrialist and made a significant contribution to the development of Bradford due to the role he played in developing the textile industry. As the Academy also has a Humanities specialism, naming the Academy after such a significant, local historical figure seems entirely fitting”.
