Whistling Cat Books
The strong moral message is wrapped up in a story about Grubson Pug who wearily sets sail to find presents for his demanding children. Only Henri, the youngest (and endearingly tiniest) child has no demands.
Captain Grubson and his crew of sea-faring dogs, an arm-wrestling cat and a parrot travel from St Benfro to cities in Europe to search for the perfect presents for his family. As Grubson chooses each gift (helped by some eccentric and comical shopkeepers) he learns some valuable lessons about each of his children – lessons which he knows he must teach them if they are to grow out of their selfish delusions.
Running into fierce winter storms on the return voyage, the only way for Captain Grubson to save his ship and her crew is to sacrifice the precious cargo of presents. Eventually back in harbour, Grubson is welcomed by his entire family who have realised that all they really want for Christmas is to have their father safely home.
The detailed illustrations (from original line drawings) bring an extra level of charm and magic to the story.
