Dudley Canal Trust Trips

Dudley Canal Trust Trips

The Car Park, Off A4123 at Birmingham New Road, Dudley ,
Our history goes back to 1963 when the Dudley Canal Tunnel Preservation Society was formed to protect the tunnel, and in particular to oppose the Railway plans to block the Tipton Portal with an embankment. In 1970 the Society became the Dudley Canal Trust. The campaign was successful, and developments continued with the tunnel and Parkhead Locks which were reopened to form a through route in 1973. In 1984 with Grant Aid help, the Trust built the first new canal tunnel for 126 years connecting into the singing cavern. 1989 saw the opening of yet another new tunnel, this time allowing our passenger boats to complete a unique underground circular trip. At this time all of our staff were volunteers, and the success of the tunnel trips was placing a great strain on them. To cope with this, Dudley Canal Trust (Trips) Ltd. was formed as a charity to run the boat trip side of the business, and today we have professional staff to run our boat trips, shop sales and catering ventures. We cater for over 80,000 passengers per year and any trading surplus is given annually to Dudley Canal Trust who use these funds to help maintain the Tunnel and Dudley Canal and it's environment.

Dudley Hippodrome

Dudley Hippodrome

Castle Hill, Dudley ,
The Hippodrome, built as a ‘twice nightly’ theatre in 1938 next door to the Plaza and opposite the Odeon Cinema, replaced the Opera House, destroyed by fire in 1936, on the same site. Externally like a super cinema of the time, in buff brick. At the centre, above the canopy, there were originally glazed, now blind, panels between the brick end bays, divided by two tall brick mullions. Above this a deep brick attic is divided by five horizontal bands. The name HIPPODROME in a central panel has been removed. Plain flank. Fly tower. Small foyer. The fan-shaped auditorium has not been destructively altered for bingo use. Stalls rake rises to a rear terrace. Single, steeply raked, deep balcony. Square proscenium with moulded architrave. Ceiling and walls with simple moulded ornament. Major adaptations have been made within the stage house. The building is well maintained and the interior still has a theatrical ‘feel’. It would be possible to return it to live use, but it would be necessary to remove the structural steelwork inserted in the fly tower. The stage is quite shallow, but there is open land at the rear.
