Save Filey Pool

Filey School, Muston Road, Filey ,
Filey Swimming Pool was built at Filey School by E.Yorks CC, using £20,000 donated by the Filey Swimming Baths Association. The Association’s volunteer army collected the funds though organising fundraising raffles etc in the town from 1959 until the pool was opened in 1976. The pool was finally built on land adjoining the Secondary School on Muston Road following additional funding by E.Y.C.C and Filey Urban District Council, among others. Ownership of the pool was then assumed by the County Council and the school to maintain and operate for the benefit of the school and people of Filey and District. Latterly the pool was transferred to the secondary school’s budget and the now North Yorkshire County Council gave them a precept to fund the extra cost. In recent years, this precept was withdrawn by the County Council and now the school can no longer afford to run the pool. Filey School decided to close the pool at the end of March 2013. This is a sad day for Filey and district swimmers. Filey Pool Action Group have been founded to explore all ways of keeping swimming facilities available to swimmers in Filey and District, by assuming responsibility for the pool and transferring ownership back to the community, or by building a new swimming pool in the town.
