Lochaber Geopark

Lochaber Geopark

Fulton House, Gordon Sq, Fort William ,
Lochaber Geopark encompasses an area of 4287Km2, including the Small Isles (Rum, Muck, Eigg and Canna) and is renowned for its spectacular scenery. With good reason as Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis at 1344m is also a collapsed caldera with, arguably one of Britain’s most beautiful glens, Glen Nevis, at its base. The Great Glen runs through Lochaber and transects the northern half of Scotland, having carved its way through one of the largest faults in Scotland, The Great Glen Fault. With such a varied abundance of geological features from calderas and intrusive igneous complexes at the most westerly point in British mainland, Ardnamurchan, to fossil reptile beds on the small island of Eigg, this encompasses the true meaning of a Geopark with a large area of outstanding geological beauty and with soo much geology at our fingertips no wonder we have so much to share with our community and visitors.
