Gateshead Rutherford Ladies FC, Sponsored by Andy Carroll

Gateshead Rutherford Ladies FC, Sponsored by Andy Carroll

Lobley Hill, Gateshead ,
Rutherford Ladies F.C were the first ever women's side in Gateshead when formed in 2001 and entered the Northern League, finishing in fifth position in their first season. Donna Finlay and Julie Earnshaw played in that first season and are still playing for the club, Finlay with over 200 appearances for the club. After a few successful seasons in the Northern League a lot of new players decided to join the squad. The team became too large and that is when the development team was formed with Sara Coxon taking a back seat from playing and took on managing at the young age of 16. The two squads ran seperately and successfully on their own for around 5 seasons until the first team folded during the season 2008-2009. This decision affected both squads due to the amount of players thatwere lost but the development team battled on through it. Last season the development team became the only womens team at Rutherford which was a scary prospect as a lot of long serving players left as well as feeling like there was more pressure on them to win. The season was a rocky one starting wth players at the beginning of the season who left a few weeks later to play for our old first team, now a team in our league. We battled our way through and finished in the top half of the league which was a great achievement for us. This season is going to be a great one for Rutherford Ladies, might of taken a long time for the team to find their feet but finally it has happened and now built up a great squad full of great attitudes and team spirit. Their are lots of new faces in the squad this season who have been a brilliant asset to the club. Liverpool's new number 9 'Andy Carroll' has made this season even greater for the ladies by agreeing to sponsor the team. It took little persuation from striker Nichola Brown who managed to bag the fantastic sponsor making the club talk of the town. The makems on the team might not be so happy to wear Newcastle's star name across their chest, but for the rest of the girls it's a dream come true. The team compete in the Durham County Womens League and are always on the look out for new players. Any player (must be 16 years or older) who is interested in being part of a fantastic club can leave a msg on the group our can contact one of the admin
