Gloucester Mystery Plays
Gloucestershire Theatre will be staging the Gloucester Mystery Plays at Gloucester & Worcester Cathedrals in November 2012 and March 2013.
Gloucestershire Theatre Ltd has been created to take over from the original Gloucestershire Drama Assocciation and its production company ACOF as the central hub forALL Non Profeshional Arts in Gloucestershire, and the production of the Gloucester Mystery Play Cycles.
Since its inception in 2000 ACOF has produced shows for The Rococo Players in venues such as The Rococo Gardens, Berkeley Castle, Warwick Castle, Woodchester Mansion, Cheltenham Ladies College, Gloucester Cathedral and Oriel College Oxford to name but a few.
For Gloucester's inaugural Mystery Plays, GTA will become the banner theatre company under which the Counties theatre companies and theatre schools in the will come together to perform these plays.
Mystery plays and Miracle plays (which are two different things) are among the earliest formally developed plays for multipal actors, first performed in medieval Europe. Originally made up of some 43 plays, only a small number of original scripts remain. To bring these scripts up to date and make them understandable to all , our Artistic Director for the event Rachel Murray has set about the massive task of re writing the Gloucester Mystery Play Scripts supported by Prof Pamela King of Bristol University.
The Medieval mystery plays focused on the representation of Bible stories in churches as tableaux with accompanying antiphonal song. They developed from the 10th to the 16th century, reaching the height of their popularity in the 15th century before being rendered obsolete by the rise of professional theatre. They were the origin of theatre in the UK, as we now know it. Performers travelled from town to town performing on the back of the wagon that transported them.
A form of performance we hope to recreate in 2013 as part of a Medieval Festival.
