Greenock Baptist Church
What we believe
As a Baptist church we are autonomous, but a member of the Baptist Union of Scotland.
We are conservatively evangelical in our theology, with our declaration of faith listed below.
We believe:
in the exclusive authority of Scripture as the inspired, infallible and complete Word of God.
that all interpretation of Scripture is under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
that the Godhead, holy and sovereign, eternally exists in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, co-equal and co-eternal.
that the Lord Jesus Christ, our God and Saviour, as Head of the church is the sole and absolute authority in all matters of faith and practice.
in the eternal deity and sinless humanity of the Lord Jesus Christ: in His virgin birth; in His substitutionary death on the cross for our sins; in His bodily resurrection from the grave; in His ascension and His personal return for His church.
in the personal deity of the Holy Spirit who indwells every true believer and is ever present to testify of Christ.
in the reality and personality of Satan, in the fall of man through the temptation of Satan and that man is now born in sin, dead in sin and utterly unable to save himself.
in salvation by faith through the shed blood of Jesus Christ.
in the New Testament practice of the baptism of believers by immersion in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We do not believe in baptism as conveying any regeneration grace.
that members of this Church have been born again and have publicly professed their faith through baptism.
in the centrality of the Lord’s Supper as an ordinance commanded of believers by the Lord Jesus Christ; that it is a memorial feast of thanksgiving for the Lord’s death and our communion with Him until He comes. It is not a sacrifice for sin, nor does it involve any change in the substance of the bread or wine.
that the preaching of the Word of God is fundamental to the work and witness of the church.
that prayer is essential in the life, work and witness of the church.
in the priesthood of all believers and that all believers are required to bear witness to the Gospel by declaring the reality of their Christian faith in the lives they lead; displaying their unity in Christ by their love for each other.
that it is the duty of all believers to take their part in the evangelism of the world and in showing the love of Christ to all.
in the resurrection of the dead; the righteous to the eternal glories of Heaven and the unrighteous to the Final Judgement and eternal punishment.
