What is Kundalini Yoga and how is it different to other forms of yoga?
The basics of Kundalini Yoga are asanas, mudras, bhandas (energy locks), and mantras (sound currents). The classes are a dynamic blend of postures that are either repetitive or held for a specific amount of time, supported with pranayama and mantra and there is always a meditation. No previous experience in yoga is required to achieve results with your very first class and students of all levels can practice it. The Kundalini Energy, which lies dormant at the base of our spine, is the life force of the universe. Awakened, it is creation in motion. Through the use of breath, movement and sound we can indeed awaken this powerful energy within and the benefits of this yoga are plentiful. It strengthens all of our internal body systems - glandular system, nervous system, lymphatic and digestive system as well as balancing all of our chakras. It is healing, mentally & physically, giving you an immense sense of well-being, openness and aliveness. It strengthens your core energy, your focus and concentration capacity and can successfully tackle your resistance to letting go of old habits that no longer serve you. Your entire being will be more balanced, helping you to communicate more effectively and to make the right choices in your life, opening yourself up to constant progress and true happiness.
Kundalini Yoga is Raj (Royal) yoga, kept a secret and only practiced by the Kings & Upper classes in India for thousands of years until it was brought to the West by the grace of Yogi Bhajan in 1969. He believed for humankind to face the challenges of our times, it needs the practice of Kundalini Yoga.
In class you will be guided through a ‘Kriya’, a particular sequence of exercises as taught by Yogi Bhajan. These will activate your various body systems and chakras with specific benefits and results. There are thousands of Kriyas, for example to balance & strengthen the nervous system, to detox your kidneys, for disease resistance, to heal your spine, to open your heart; the list is limitless and this is what makes this science so fascinating. Once you step in, you realize this ocean is endless, bountiful and blissful. And it is challenging you. The deep spirituality that lies at the chore of its teachings will guide you and support you - to open yourself up to your creativity and power, facing the challenges of your live with joy, strength and love. Kundalini Yoga is not an exercise; it is an experience - giving you the experience of your true Self. It is called the ‘Yoga of Awareness’.
