The Painted House UK

Welcome to my page... my name is Jules and I started The Painted House UK in early 2012. I love all things old and love being creative which is how The Painted House UK evolved. I live in a big Victorian House with lots of old furniture and I was finding that the dark oak and old pine furniture I had was quite dark and oppressive. I love and always have done the Shabby Chic, Country Farmhouse, French Vintage style of furniture and house dressing. I looked on the web and on Ebay to find furniture that would best suit my style but then realised I didn't have to buy new furniture I just needed to give my existing furniture a 'revamp'... My first piece was a very old armchair that we had stored in the cellar for several years, I rubbed it down, undercoated it and following insturction from the paint suppliers gave it 3 coats of Farrow and Ball Eggshell paint and finished it off with a healthy coat of Clear Briwax. I then dug out my old Laura Ashley Home Decor books and taught myself to recover the seat... it was a huge success and I loved every minute of it. From that day forward I haven't looked back - I now source pieces of furniture daily and work during the week whilst my little ones are at school - Josh is 11 and just started High School and Keira-Poppy is 6 and in year 2 at Infant School. My children and husband are my world and I wouldn't feel comfortable going out to work 7 hours a day and have to put the kids in childcare and no warm meal on the table for my hubbie when he finishes a hard day at work so the work I do (I call it work - it's much more like lots of fun and creativity) suits us all down to the ground. I can have the school holidays to spend with the kids with the odd traul or pick up of furniture pieces. Even the kids know the kinds of things I look for and help me on my picking expeditions... in fact my daughter thinks she is my business partner and you can often see her with a piece of sandpaper in her hand helping Mum or a screwdriver helping me remove screws... the list goes on. All the pieces I work on and sell are given a lot of love and care - they are prepared throroughly to remove all the old varnish, paint etc then undercoated or primered, then given at least 3 coats of high quality Eggshell or Chalk paints from Annie Sloan, Farrow and Ball, Laura Ashley etc then all pieces are finished off with a generous helping of Clear Wax to help preserve the paint finish. I don't tend to distress a lot of my pieces as I think time will help with this but I do have a go at the odd piece with good end results. I work from a Coachhouse in my garden and on cold days even use my kitchen... I have plenty of storage space and currently have 2 garages full of pieces to complete!!! My poor husband has a lovely Porsche that often has to sit out in the rain to make room for yet another piece of furniture... I have had several customer orders to complete and each one has been a great success with positive feedback and requests for further pieces to be completed. It is time consuming to get the right finish and only with practice can you get to a position that you are totally happy with the finish you are getting.
