'Active Soccer- Hertford' is the official Hertfordshire branch of the Nation-wide Active Soccer company.
Active soccer aims to provide a fun, health and inclusive football experience for boy and girls of any ability and any age.
Head Coach Steve Abrams:
Steve is based in Hertford, and is married with two boys with the whole family being dedicated to sport. The boys aged 13 and 14 are high achievers in academy football. Steve is CRB/DBS checked and qualified in Level 1 and 2 coaching, alongside his role as a football scout. He is also trained in first aid and safe guarding children. He is also qualified in multiple sports which include basketball, tennis, hockey, rugby, handball and cricket.
Steve’s belief: Is that the most important rule for coaching is that the game should be safe and fun. Additionally, coaching should be available for children of all ages and mixed ability. Steve has found that at local club level, there is an emphasis on obtaining a result over good sports practice. You will often find many teams with the ability to hit long balls and use big physical players in order to win a game. This contradicts Steve’s principals of teaching technique, positioning and space awareness.
His teams are coached to a high individual skill level which they are encouraged to use during the game and not just at training. He therefore ensures that all children are praised for their attempt to show a skill and never receive negative comments if their skill is not completed.
His philosophy is that most of the short comings in football in the UK come from a bad approach to coaching principals. If we are to be as technically aware as some of our European neighbours, then the technique levels at a young age need to be encouraged and nurtured from the offset.
At his club coaching levels he insists that all players are able to play with both feet and spend a lot of time on their ability to use the inside and the outside of both feet.
Weight of pass and positional responsibilities are taught at all of his coaching sessions with a high priority to awareness of space.
His training sessions are always varied on a week by week basis to keep them fresh and fun, and the feedback received from players and parents is always positive.
Steve is calm by nature and tries to build the confidence of players with constant praise. This is rewarded by increased performance and a happy and confident child.
All players under his guidance are required to show respect to all officials and members of the opposing teams at all times. All players are required to act with dignity and respect before, during and after games.
Whilst many children would like to be the next professional sports star in their chosen sport, it is his belief that regardless of the level they subsequently achieve, the principals and disciplines that they learn through his coaching will serve them well in life in general.
