I grew up in the wild wilderness of Wales, bound to nature by nature. My sister, our 3 brothers and I roamed the Hafod estate where we grew up, one of the finest examples of picturesque landscape in Europe, which runs as a trust. We soaked up the landscape and a love of the countryside,The 200 hectares of the Ystwyth Valley and surrounding hills were a back garden to us, We spent our childhood days climbing every tree and turning over every stone until we knew the landscape like the backs of our hands. The pastoral surroundings inspired creativity in all of us. I was raised with unique one to one education experience, my varied teachers gave me the gift of learning in my own time and helped to nurture the talents that were waiting, I believe this translates my path in life now as I work on such close terms with my customers, each new person and their shoe specification is completely unique, names and exchanges are remembered, often we become great friends in the process. The precious exchange nowhere to be seen in a factory of conform and anonymity. I began Shoemaking when I was apprenticed to shoemaker, Alan James Raddon in 2005. Alan has been successfully trading for over 30 years. His deep rooted philosophy of Shoemaking stems from his training in Reflexology with Doreen Bailey and in the belief of strengthening and healing of the feet through wearing comfortable, well fitting footwear. In 2005 Alan decided in absence of direct beneficiaries to pass on his years of carefully developed skills and philosophy of Shoemaking to take on an Apprentice which I then completed 5 years later. Once I had mastered the art of Shoemaking I set up business independent of my mentor in 2010. I won the inaugural Balvenie young master of craft award in 2011 which began the launch of my business then shortly after as part of an annual creative business competition a year’s residency 2011/12 in one of the creative units designed by Thomas Heatherwick at Aberystwyth Art Center. In October I moved the workshop to my home studio near Machynlleth where I am working on a series of projects which I will do my best to update you on. I am passionate about providing a unique service, and making shoes to last and be repaired. My customers range from all walks of life from all over the world. I make each pair of shoes to measure by carefully fitting each pair to your unique feet. The majority of my customers send their measurements by post and then we do the fitting over the phone. I work from home so my work hours are flexible. I am available for fittings by appointment.
