Newcastle University Medical School

Newcastle University Medical School

Framlington Place, Newcastle upon Tyne ,
Newcastle Medical School is part of the University Faculty of Medical Sciences and the wider Newcastle Biomedicine. which is a world leading collaboration of research scientists, engineers, medical doctors and teaching professionals who deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in medicine, dentistry and health sciences. The faculty is a recognised national centre of excellence which brings together internationally respected research in clinical care, basic science and engineering in an innovative environment. It excels in tackling challenges in health and healthcare. The key areas of focus for the faculty include ageing, stem cells, cancer, cell biology, genetics, drug development, medicine in society, and neuroscience. Medicine is concerned with the training of knowledgeable, caring, competent and skilful professionals, who understand health and disease. The origins of Newcastle University can be traced to the establishment in 1834 of a School of Medicine. Look back in our timeline for further historical points of interest. Throughout its modern history, Newcastle has been at the forefront of curriculum innovation in medicine and our integrated approach sweeps away the traditional separation between pre-clinical and clinical training, bringing you into contact with patients from the start of the course. There are two courses to choose from: Medicine and Surgery MBBS Honours- the 5 year programme which is designed to provide a general medical education for all types of doctor, which will serve as the foundation for later career specialisation. The structure of this degree means that students develop core knowledge alongside clinical competence, supported by visits to general practice and hospitals and contact with patients from the first year. Medicine and Surgery (Accelerated Programme) MBBS Honours - the four year programme which is designed for graduates of any discipline who wish to train as a doctor, and others whose prior professional experience qualifies them for entry. Students on this course follow a case-led approach with clinical cases introduced as the ‘trigger’ to ensure a problem-first, task-based focus to their learning. They then join with the third year (Stage 3) of the 5 year programme to complete the final three years. We have a partnership with Durham University which means students can apply to spend Phase I (Stages 1 and 2) either at Newcastle University or at Durham University’s Queen’s Campus in Stockton. For more information about these courses see our website http://www.ncl.ac.uk/biomedicine/undergrad/medicine.htm

Improvisation Foundation

Improvisation Foundation

“Improv” or “Impro” is short for “Improvisation” - a theatrical skill that requires performers to work together to create scenes from their imagination. To improvise is to un-censor the mind, sharpen the senses, release the muse, free the humour and liberate the storyteller in us all. Oh, and its enormous fun!" "I can wholeheartedly recommend these workshops for anybody in Newcastle. My face still hurts from laughing on monday night. No experience necessary" Nazim Kourgli Currently we are running 2 weekly Improver groups (those with some improv experience) at: Live Theatre on Wednesday evenings, and The Jesmond Cricket Club on Monday evenings. For newcomers we hold a special Beginners Day every few months, that prepares you to move onto the Improvers sessions, and Performance. See our events for more info. The teachers, Ian Mclaughlin and Bev Fox (Mac & Fox) have been practising improvisation for over 20 years, and are founder-members of the Suggestibles. Further credits credits include: The Comedy Store Players, Eddie Izzards' "One Word Improv, Ken Campbells' "Shall We Shog" at the Globe Theatre, Court in the Act and Spontaneous Combustion. They were founder members of The pioneering Impro Musical Company for 12 years - the first Improv show in the West End - updated for TV and Radio 4 as The Bootleg Broadway Show. They take great inspiration in from Keith Johstone (author Impro and Impro for Storytellers) whom they have trained with, and Viola Spolin.

Puddle Ducks Newcastle and the North East

Puddle Ducks Newcastle and the North East

Puddle Ducks’ effective, instructor-led baby and child swimming classes are all about fun, confidence, grace and safety in the water. Babies can join our fantastic classes as soon as Mum is ready to get in the water after giving birth. We teachlife-saving skills from as young as six months old, so that should your child ever need them, they have a bank of invaluable skills that could save their life. Each class lasts half an hour and provides a wonderful bonding opportunity for parents and their little ones. We’ve deliberately limited our class sizes to nine. This gives excellent teacher-student ratios and means we can offer truly individually-tailored swimming lessons for babies, toddlers and children that let them learn with other children of their age, all at their own pace. Quality of teaching has been our top priority for ten years, and we’re constantly evolving our teaching programme and methods to make sure your children receive the very best swimming lessons out there. All of our classes take place in specially selected clean, warm pools and combine a carefully balanced set of activities including group and individual work, swimming, submersion, floating (without armbands!), songs and games. We’re big on fun, and our classes incorporate rhyme, music and movement based on extensive child development research. We’ve even had our unique class soundtracks written by professional musicians. Be warned, the songs are very addictive – you’ll soon be singing them in the bath and in the car! Visit http://www.puddleducks.com/franchisees/15 to find your local class now.
