Dame Allan's School, Newcastle

Dame Allan's School, Newcastle

Dame Allan's Schools is a collection of Independent schools in Fenham, in the west end of Newcastle upon Tyne, England. It comprises a coeducational junior school, single-sex senior schools and a coeducational sixth form. Founded in 1705 as a charity, the original schools are two of the oldest schools in the city.HistoryThey were founded by Dame Eleanor Allan, the daughter of a local goldsmith and the widow of a tobacco merchant, to provide a proper education for "40 poor boys and 20 poor girls of the parishes of St Nicholas and St John". The schools were endowed with land at Wallsend, to the east of Newcastle. The original school seems likely to have been near St Nicholas' Church, and certainly was by 1778. The schools occupied at least six sites before they moved to the present site in Fenham, in 1935. The senior schools have shared the current site since 1935, but until 1988 they operated as separate boys’ and girls’ schools with a joint governing body. The governors then took the decision to appoint a principal with overall responsibility for the management of the two schools. At the same time, they created a joint mixed sixth form and reintroduced a mixed junior school. The plural, "schools", refers to the fact that Dame Allan's operates in a diamond format. In effect, Dame Allan's consists of 4 different schools: the co-educational Junior School for nursery to Year 6 are located in a separate building in Spital Tongues; the single sex boys' and girls' schools for years 7 to 11; and the co-educational sixth form (years 12 to 13).

Central Newcastle High School

Central Newcastle High School

Central Newcastle High School is an independent day school for girls in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. The Junior School is split across two sites in Gosforth and Sandyford Park and the Senior School is located in the neighbouring suburb of Jesmond. It was announced on 29th January 2013 that Central Newcastle High School would be merging with their near neighbour Church High School to form a new school which is to be called Newcastle High School.HistoryCentral High partly traces its lineage to Gateshead High School, which was opened by the Girls' Public Day School Company (now known as the Girls' Day School Trust) in 1876. In 1889, an additional preparatory department was opened but pupil numbers fell; it was closed six years later and reopened as Central Newcastle High School. The new Central High moved into its current home around 1899 with the foundation stone for the current building being laid by Earl Grey on the 13th of December 1898. Gateshead High was closed in 1907 and its pupils transferred to Central High. With the pupil numbers growing, the GDST bought a property in Sandyford in 1999. It was previously a convent and school run by the Sisters of Nazareth. The main building, Nazareth House, was designed by Neoclassical architect John Dobson in 1817. When the GDST bought the property, Nazareth House was renamed Chapman House after Ms Angela Chapman, the headmistress at that time.

Improvisation Foundation

Improvisation Foundation

“Improv” or “Impro” is short for “Improvisation” - a theatrical skill that requires performers to work together to create scenes from their imagination. To improvise is to un-censor the mind, sharpen the senses, release the muse, free the humour and liberate the storyteller in us all. Oh, and its enormous fun!" "I can wholeheartedly recommend these workshops for anybody in Newcastle. My face still hurts from laughing on monday night. No experience necessary" Nazim Kourgli Currently we are running 2 weekly Improver groups (those with some improv experience) at: Live Theatre on Wednesday evenings, and The Jesmond Cricket Club on Monday evenings. For newcomers we hold a special Beginners Day every few months, that prepares you to move onto the Improvers sessions, and Performance. See our events for more info. The teachers, Ian Mclaughlin and Bev Fox (Mac & Fox) have been practising improvisation for over 20 years, and are founder-members of the Suggestibles. Further credits credits include: The Comedy Store Players, Eddie Izzards' "One Word Improv, Ken Campbells' "Shall We Shog" at the Globe Theatre, Court in the Act and Spontaneous Combustion. They were founder members of The pioneering Impro Musical Company for 12 years - the first Improv show in the West End - updated for TV and Radio 4 as The Bootleg Broadway Show. They take great inspiration in from Keith Johstone (author Impro and Impro for Storytellers) whom they have trained with, and Viola Spolin.
