The Victoria Tunnel is a Grade II listed structure which runs under the city from the Town Moor down to the Tyne. It was built as a waggonway to transport coal from Spital Tongues (Leazes Main) Colliery to the river and operated between 1842 and the mid 1860s. In 1939, the City Engineers converted the Tunnel into an air raid shelter to protect hundreds of Newcastle citizens during World War II. Between 2007 and 2009, the Tunnel was carefully repaired and opened for guided tours by Newcastle City Council with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and TyneWear Partnership. This part of the Tunnel is now open all year round to the public for guided tours operated by The Ouseburn Trust and include fantastic sound and visual effects. Tours cost £4 per adult £2 for over 12s and last approximately two hours. Visitors can take advantage of discounted meals (up to 25% off) at four neighbouring food outlets (La Gabbia, The Cluny, Cumberland Arms and Hotel du Vin) to make the most of a great visitor attraction.

I am planning to set up as a not-for-profit distibutor of zines and small press publications. I am also going to run a stall at various events around the North-East of England.

Built over the foundations of Hadrian's Wall, Blackfriars Hall is adjacent to the beautiful Catholic Church of St Dominic's; home for over 130 years to Dominican monks or 'Blackfriars' as they became known on account of the black cloak they wore over their white religious habits. (The colours are rumoured to be the origins of famous stripes of Newcastle United.) Today the Hall is run by the St Vincent de Paul Society; a voluntary not-for-profit charity dedicated to tackling poverty and disadvantage. Located on New Bridge Street at the gateway to the fashionable Ouseburn Valley, the Hall is less than a mile from the City Centre and only 15-20 minutes' walk from Monument or Central Station. With a capacity of 250, a sprung dance floor and stage, full catering facilities and a bar managed by a local microbrewery, Blackfriars Hall is the perfect place for a special celebration, banquet or event. The Hall is available for private hire at very reasonable rates throughout the year and every booking helps the SVP carry on their good work.

The Blackfriars Centre is a part of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, offering support to the local community. We have friendly staff and we will always strive to deliver a high and professional standard of service to our customers. As we are part of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, we are an non-profit organisation; all the money we recieve will go towards improving our services and supporting the local community.
