What is Advocacy? > Advocacy helps people, in partnership, to express their views and wishes, so that they can be heard. Advocacy is free and confidential. Advocates are independent, non-judgmental and do not make decisions for their partners. How can an Advocate help? >At times of change, so that people feel in control and that they are well represented. In situations where the aims and wishes of others may make it difficult for persons with dementia to express their own views. When there is disagreement about a decision. What will the Advocate do? > The Advocate will spend time with the person with dementia (the Partner) to find out what their understanding of the situation is and what they would like to happen. The Advocate will help the Partner to express those wishes. The Advocate can accompany and support the Partner at meetings to enable the Partner’s wishes to be known. If the Partner does not want to be present at the meeting, the Advocate can attend and represent the Partner.
