Taking its name from the many silversmiths that once inhabited this historic thoroughfare, in its time, The Pram Shop, Maddox Pet Store, Lockwoods Shoe Shop, Donald Carruther's Menswear and Leo’s Homemade Sweet Shop once traded here. The town centre has undergone many developments in recent years including new accommodation for the growing student population, the Millennium Footbridge, the Queen's Campus of Durham University, a number of office buildings built along the south bank of the River Tees as part of the Teesdale development and the Infinity Bridge.
