The Bollin catchment is approximately 287km and runs
from Macclesfield Forest in the east to where the Bollin
joins the Manchester Ship Canal near Lymm. It’s
watershed includes towns such as Macclesfield, Bollington,
Wilmslow and Knutsford, as well as Manchester Airport.
Along the length of the Bollin, and its tributaries, there are
a number of designated sites, such as National Nature
Reserves and Sites of Special Scientific Interest (including
Rostherne and Tatton Meres), which highlight the
important habitats and species found in the area.
The river Bollin, and all its tributary streams and brooks
are important for a number of reasons. They play a very
important part in the water cycle, acting as drainage
channels for surface water.
They also provide an important, but fragile freshwater
habitat that many different species rely on.
River valleys and floodplains provide fertile soils for
farming, and have aesthetic and recreational value,
providing opportunities for healthy outdoor activities
such as walking, fishing and canoeing.
