National Film and Television School

National Film and Television School

The National Film and Television School is an internationally renowned film school established in 1971 and based at Beaconsfield Studios in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire. Its talented community of students makes around a hundred films a year on courses that are still over 90% practical and unlike anything offered at any other UK film school. It currently has around 220 full-time students, with a further two dozen part-timers on the Script Development course and about a thousand a year on its short courses. Beaconsfield Studios comprises film and television stages, animation and production design studios, edit suites, sound post-production facilities, a music recording studio and a dubbing theatre, all furnished with new generation digital equipment equivalent to that used at the highest level in today's film and television industry. It is the only film school in the UK which boasts its own film and television studios. The BBC stated that the NFTS was the "leading centre of excellence for education in film and television programme making", and noted that it was "relevant to the industry's present and future needs." British Film Magazine once described the NFTS as being one of the few schools to come "very, very close" to guaranteeing a job in the film industry, and named its leader a "maverick"; Filmmaking.net named it one of two films schools outside the US which had such a high international reputation.HistoryThe National Film School opened in 1971, the work of four years of planning to create an institution to train personnel for the British film industry. Department of Education and Science had in 1967 recommended the creation of a national film school for the UK, and in 1969 an inquiry led by Lord Lloyd of Hampstead began to develop plans.

Beaconsfield Squash Club

Beaconsfield Squash Club

48 Shepherds Lane, Beaconsfield ,
Beaconsfield Squash Club was built in 1972/3 by Lord Burnham on land that was owned by him. Today, we are a members club with a lease on our premises from the Burnham Estate. The club was opened in June 1973 by Judge Lawrence Verney who had at one time played squash for Wales. His challenge was that he could beat any player the first time he played them and proved it by winning a match against Jonny Leslie (who later became the last British Amateur Champion.) Well known former members include: Jonny Leslie and Phil Kenyon who each represented England, Stuart Davenport who was the New Zealand number one, Sue Devoy who for a number of years was the Ladies World Chanpion as well as Dick Carter who rose to prominence as a Senior. During the 1970's the club provided almost the entire Buckinghamshire squash team. Now Beaconsfield can still claim to be the most successful club in the county, with four men's and three ladies teams in the county league. The Club boasts a very strong Junior squad. The club welcomes players at any level. We offer beginners excellent coaching facilities and the chance to play in a variety of competitions as well as sample our range of social activities.
