I mostly work in willow, some of which I grow and the rest I buy from growers in Scotland or Somerset. I also collect hedgerow materials such as larch, hazel, dogwood and birch from the local woodlands near to where I live. I often work on community art projects, which draw on the inspirations, skills and input of local residents, school children and other community groups. I am hopeless at working indoors for more than a few hours at a time so being a willow weaver provides the solution to my problem. It takes me outdoors to grow and harvest my materials; to produce willow fences; to make some of my baskets and to construct and paddle my coracles. Basically it keeps me sane. Fundamental to my business is the fact that willow weaving is an ancient and sustainable craft. It is derived from a technique of land management called coppicing which dates back nearly 4000 years. A tree will be cut down to ground level and the cut stump will then produce shoots. These shoots are allowed to grow on for one or more years. They are then harvested for use and the whole cycle begins again.
