More and more of us now want to reduce the effects of natural skin aging. As we get older the skin starts to lose it’s elasticity. This can be compounded by over-exposure to UV light and smoking.
Many patients undergo surgical cosmetic procedures but these can prove very costly and the skin is often bruised and swollen for several weeks afterwards.
The arrival of Botulinum toxin injections 10 years ago has changed all this. In the UK, Botulinum is manufactured by ALLERGAN and marketed as BOTOX or VISTABEL (http://www.allergan.co.uk/treatments/glabellar.htm) In the USA, Botulinum toxin injections are now the commonest of all cosmetic procedures.
These injections can be given relatively easily and produce effects lasting 3—4 months. Frown lines, forehead wrinkles and crow’s feet can be treated within 30 minutes and the vast majority of patients resume normal activities immediately afterwards. After 2 or 3 sets of injections many patients get a longer lasting effect.
Currently BOTOX and VISTABEL are not licensed for use in those over 65 (although this is at the clinician’s discretion) or in those who are pregnant or breast feeding.
Botulinum works by temporarily preventing nerve signals from reaching facial muscles and the muscle therefore relaxes. With muscle relaxation the skin smoothes out.
Side effects following the injections are usually minimal and short-lived and include redness and swelling. Rarely temporary drooping of the eyelid can occur.
Patient satisfaction levels are higher after Botulinum injections than any other cosmetic procedure and 90% would recommend them to a friend.
Dermal fillers are also now being more widely used. Fillers can be used around the eyes and forehead and they can also be around the mouth and for lip augmentation. The effects of fillers are seen straight away and usually last 6 months.
A number of preparations (eg Restylane)are available but many of these are associated with a high incidence of allergic reactions. An allergy test is therefore recommended before some of these are given.
UMA JEUNESSE is different in that it is derived from a naturally occurring compound and there is no need for allergy testing with this product.
As an introductory offer Botulinum treatments are available from £150 with Fillers available from £250. This includes a follow-up consultation two weeks later if required.
At the follow-up appointment other areas could be treated if appropriate.
When attending for an appointment please do not wear any make-up. A headband would be ideal for tying hair back.
