As a designer/maker of a beautiful collection of paper cut lamps and shades, Hannah Nunn dreamed of having a shop front of her own with a workshop attached. She was inspired by the work of many of her contemporaries who were working with light and thought it would be wonderful to gather them all together in one glowing space. The perfect premises became available and in 2005 Radiance was born. Since then, Radiance has gone from strength to strength, appearing in many publications including The Guardian Interiors Guide, The Times Magazine and BBC Homes & Antiques. Radiance has a blog which features interviews with makers, news, ideas and lots of inspiration. Hebden Bridge provides the perfect setting for Radiance, famous for it's independent shops and galleries, great cafes and picturesque Yorkshire countryside. It all started over a few too many drinks one evening. Polly Webber and 'H' Gregg decided to set up an information and education centre on all aspects of sustainable development. They put an ad in the local paper asking for interested people to get in touch, and where overwhelmed by the response. Having decided to not borrow any money for the venture, they went to the landlord of Hebble end mill, which was a very underused premises, and asked him to lend them some units for a year until they got on their feet. He didn't quite agree, but he did offer the units for a peppercorn rent, and asked 'can you start on Monday?!' And there began a round of making bags out of recycled jeans, and selling them, building the centre up step by step, with plenty of volunteers and enthusiasm.
