The Seven Stars, Sidcup

The Seven Stars, Sidcup

Foots Cray High Street, Sidcup ,
From “Edith’s Streets” Seven Stars. Has records going back to 1753. It has a weather boarded range at right angles to the road, which is probably 16th, though the windows and the stucco are 19th. The range parallel with the road was added c1930. The garden overlooks the River Cray and the site of the old paper mill. It showed a red lantern on the ford before the bridge was built. Then in the early 19th traffic from Maidstone to London via Footscray increased considerably and this was an important inn for coaches with names such as The Times, The Balloon and The Sovereign. In the middle ages the Madonna and the seven stars was a religious symbol, which went out with the Reformation. During excavations an old plaster plaque of a Madonna's head surrounded by seven stars was found in a well and it is now inside the pub above a fireplace http://edithsstreets.blogspot.co.uk/2010/01/thames-tributary-cray-tributary-to.html From the Bexley Council Foots Cray Conservation Area document - On the north side of the High Street, the Seven Stars public house incorporates 16th Century elements, notably the weather boarded range at right angles to the road. The gable ended wing projects forward of all other buildings on the north side of the High Street, reflecting the former narrowness of this road. The wing parallel to the road is a mostly 20th-century addition. The garden behind overlooks the River Cray, former mill pond and the site of the old watermill. http://www.engagespace.co.uk/engage/nmc/uploaddocs/Consult1308/Foots%20Cray%20conservation%20area%20consultation%20draft.pdf Link to British Listed Buildings - http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-198672-the-seven-stars-public-house-greater-lon
