The Company was originally founded by Jill Freud in 1980 to tour productions of popular classics to venues in East Anglia. Following a successful Christmas production at Southwold in 1983 Jill was approached by the Chairman of St Edmund’s Hall to take over the management of the Southwold Summer Theatre, which had been producing repertory theatre since the 1950’s. 1984 saw the first repertory season produced by Jill Freud and Company. From the outset the Company aspired to raise standards; installing raked seating in the first year and including three ‘Classic’ plays in the programme. This year the Company is celebrating its 29th year in Southwold, during which time it has gone from strength to strength. The programme was slightly reduced to accommodate more rehearsal time and, from 1992 onwards, performances were extended by transferring productions to the The Jubilee Hall in Aldeburgh.
