Royal Oak
“The Royal Oak dates to 1002 when King Ethered the Unready granted his wife, Emma the tenement as a wedding gift. The name Royal Oak originates from the English Civil War 1642-1649, at which time Winchester was a Royalist stronghold During Oliver Cromwell’s rule the wearing of an oak leaf, particularly in Winchester, was a secret badge showing that you remained loyal to the king!
