The Spice Artist

The Spice Artist

Artist Profile Mervyn is a self-taught, self-representing artist. He is often referred to as outsider artist. He has been creating art in various forms since an early age, but has had no formal training or education in fine arts. Working with his internal urges, his works have been described as "stirring and radical". Mervyn is now a full-time professional artist dabbling with his ideas and inspirations onto the canvas in his studio. He is focused on painting with acrylics and is also known by his pet name "The Spice Artist". Mervyn's has taken part in several solo and group exhibitions internationally. His works can be found in numerous private and corporate collections throughout the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada, as well as throughout the European continent, the Middle East and Asia. Mervyn was born 1983 in Singapore, and now lives and works in Manchester. Inspiration Mervyn's distinctive paintings emphasis on bold, vibrant colours. Primarily dabbling in abstracts, he is constantly coming up with new refreshing visual ideas onto his works. A lot of Mervyn's current work is based on humour. "Alot of my inspiration comes from the natural surroundings and through my travels backpacking in the North Africa, the Middle East and India. I love walking through the buzzing souks and smelling the aromas in the stale air. I love watching the locals haggle and trade. I love the sounds unheard of. I love the fact that I have all these memories to keep" To Canvas "In my studio, I am creating a free flow of ideas, thoughts and emotions, narrated in an abstraction in which colours and shapes randomly collide. My canvas is like a toy to me, extremely personal yet universally relevant to the human journey. I dabble in modern abstract images which are often received through inner vision and self-conflict expression. In this journey through expressionism, I have discovered my artistic style and philosophy. I have chosen primarily pure abstract expression as it allows individual viewers to reach inside themselves for their own inner response to the work. This way, I have created an emotional response without even being specific. I am entirely self-taught" ------------------------------------------------- PAST/FUTURE SHOWS & EXHIBTIONS: MAY DAY Art Exhibition - London, United Kingdom 01 May - 09 May 2008 Red Cross Summer Exhibition "Victims of Arms Conflicts" - The Hague, Netherlands 07 Jun - 27 Jun 2008 One Night Stand @ Sidebar Phoenix - Arizona, USA 11 Mar 2009 Showcase @ Taurus Bar Manchester, United Kingdom 01 Mar - 31 Mar 2011 Showcase @ Taurus Bar Manchester, United Kingdom 01 Oct - 31 Oct 2012 If you are interested in any of my works, please contact me at art@mervyntay.com Thank you for supporting ORIGINAL ART!

Shelley Thomas - Artist Blacksmith and Jeweller

The Forge Kew Bridge Steam Museum, Green Dragon Lane, Brentford ,
Hello and thanks for visiting my Facebook page! I've created this Facebook page to share my pieces of work, to tell you the stories behind them and to reveal a peak-around-the-curtain glance of the goings on at a London blacksmith's forge! Here's a little bit about me, my inspiration and why I love to create original pieces from metal... My inspiration comes primarily from my subconscious mind, what my senses have absorbed over the years constantly leads me to what I do and how I do it. On a conscious level I am directly influenced by what I see around me where ever I am; I look at and see the man-made more than the natural, I need a pylon or two to be marching across the countryside for my attention to be grabbed! My work is asymmetrical, quite flamboyant and feminine which makes it unusual for ironwork. I love the opposites together, trapping fist size chunks of crystals in cages of steel...fragility and strength. Humour also comes into it; my whimsical bondage bed that makes most people smile rather than wince. A lot of my work in the past has been very ornate, nowadays it is becoming simpler, but I suspect that it’s just a phase. I love minimalism; looking at it, being with it, but the baroque comes naturally to my hands. I love working with clients - finding what they want and combining it with what I want is the challenge. I guess it is the female in me...always wanting to please. It is extremely important to me that my clients are very happy with the end result. Over the last couple of years I have developed an interest in making jewellery and small sculpture using found iron and precious metals. I am currently working on a new project ‘Ferrous Road Kill’ using rusty pieces of steel which I find in the gutter whilst out walking. I embellish these pieces with 22 carat gold and semi precious stones. Much of my work involves making bespoke pieces of architectural ironwork and furniture for private clients, specialising in fantasy beds. I have in the past done a lot of ironwork for restaurants and open spaces including the champagne bar at The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Now I would like to concentrate on working for individuals rather than businesses...this I find more satisfying. I am house blacksmith to the ‘Bar Estilo’ restaurant chain; so far I have worked on the interior of 7 of their venues, designing and making bespoke balconies, balustrades, light fittings, wine cages. I display my work in Fire and Iron Gallery (…THE blacksmith’s gallery in the UK…) and at my own teeny showroom next to my forge at Kew Bridge Steam Museum. I open my forge most Sundays for students and hobbyists who want to come and experiment with smithing. If you're interested - post your request on my Wall!
