At Harrogate Jujitsu Club we offer a friendly and safe training environment for Juniors and Adults to learn cool tricks and serious martial arts techniques! Owner and chief instructor Leon Donnelly 7th dan blackbelt (shihan) started his martial arts journey at the age of 7 training first in Judo, then once he reached teenage years began training in Shotokan and Wada ryu Karate, which led to free style sport karate/kick boxing in which he competed in as a teenager. Leon began his Goshin Jujitsu career whilst training in karate and used to train 5/6 days a week as a teenager. After a few years of this training schedule he decided to drop the karate and concentrate on Jujitsu, he gained his black belt at the age of 18. At the age of 26 Leon was introduced to thai boxing and has now competed and trained in this for over 10 years to date. Leon has also had training in Ken jutsu and Iaido (sword), Aikido, western boxing and Kung Fu. At Harrogate jujitsu Club we offer a core of Traditional and Modern Goshin Jujitsu along with a mix of other martial arts, mainly Thai Boxing and Groundfighting skills which form a very effective and satisfying martial arts training system. Junior students from 5 years to 14 will gain confidence, self awareness, discipline,dexterity and seriously good ANTI BULLYING skills which are needed in the schoolyard playground arena! Adult students from 14 years to no limit will gain the same confidence, self awareness,dexterity along side fitness, serious self defense skills including reading and neutralising threatening situations peacefully. And of course the knowledge of a very old and technical martial art! With a programme designed to develop a child's physical, psychological and social attributes, as well as gently encouraging rugby specific skills (running with the ball, finding space, kicking, catching, scoring a try etc) the popularity & growth of Rugbytots across the UK reflects the quality of our programme. THE CIRCUIT Gymophobics 10 station Circuit combines five different exercise modalities, i.e. cardio-vascular, isotonic, isometric, calisthenics and stretch in one 30 minute session. This is unusual as most exercise regimes focus on just one (occasionally two) types of exercise. In conventional Gyms, rarely, if ever, is Isometric exercise prescribed. This form of exercise which involves squeesing and contracting muscles to increase tonus was extremely popular in the early part of the last century but went out of fashion with the arrival of Gyms and Health Clubs in the 1960's. All modern Gyms rely entirely on Resistance exercise and ignore Isometrics despite an enormous volume of evidence to show how effective it can be.
