Letchworth Retailers Index & This Week's Bargains

Letchworth Retailers Index & This Week's Bargains

the gallery Station Road, Letchworth ,
How many times have you heard someone say 'we haven't got enough shops'? Its a well used phrase in Letchworth. In actual fact for a small town we have a large variety of goods available, and unfortunately it is the small independent retailer who is often overlooked, its easier to go to a large store who advertise large scale in newspapers and TV and who can afford to sell at the lowest possible price, but what might we be missing if we only shop in chains? Large shops are not interested in selling unique goods or getting you an item they do not currently stock, most small businesses will do this. Small shops are also more likely to listen to your exact requirements and try to accommodate you. Small independent businesses are often short of time money and staff and find it difficult to spend vast amounts of cash (and time) getting sufficient publicity to launch new products successfully or inform customers of their latest bargains. All successful shops rely on moving on old stock fast by discounting, but unless you shop frequently and who has the time to do that these days, you probably miss many opportunities to buy these bargains in smaller shops, as you do not know they are available. Most of us use the internet now, so we go into towns far less frequently than we used to and many of us have lost touch with what is on offer locally. The Green House wants to contribute to the drive to keep the shops we already have solvent and bring more customers to Letchworth from other towns. We are committed to giving small businesses support to enable them to inform the public of what they have on offer and what a good service they give to Letchworth residents. This is a free service, we are asking for donations though, as we need to raise some capital for our own needs, in this case our training scheme for people wishing to become self-employed, we need office equipment and hope that by helping others they in turn will help us. If you know a good retailer who would benefit from some extra publicity let us know or perhaps tell them about our service and ask them to get in touch, we'' do our best to help.

The Cloisters (Letchworth)

The Cloisters (Letchworth)

The Cloisters in Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire in the UK, was built by Quaker Miss Annie Jane Lawrence (1863-1953), the daughter of Alfred Lawrence (1826 - 1875), who, with his brother Frederick, owned 'Lawrence Brothers, Smiths and Founders', and his wife Mary Elizabeth. Originally built as an open-air school dedicated to Psychology, with accommodation for 20 students, students were encouraged to study "how thought affects action and what causes and produces thought." Through healthy outdoor living it was intended that the students would develop healthy minds. The building was also designed to hold lectures, conferences, drama and musical performances as well as organ recitals. Students were also taught skills from the Arts and Crafts movement.Designed by architect William Harrison Cowlishaw, building commenced on the 3-acre (12,000 m2) site in 1905, and the building opened on 17 January 1907, having cost the then huge sum of £20,000. Miss Lawrence built a house for herself, 'Cloisters Lodge', alongside.DesignThe design reputedly came to Miss Lawrence in a dream. The building originally consisted of a large half-oval 'open-air room' called the `Cloisters Garth' with an open colonnade to the south and large glazed bays to the north; this was flanked by two wings, one housing the kitchen and store rooms and the other the cubicles and dressing rooms for an oval open-air swimming pool. It was designed according to the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement, and was built using marbles and other materials from all over Europe.
